What Is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a generalized term used to describe reading problems. It is a product of thought and a special way of reacting to confusion. It is not limited to reversals of letters and words - a common misconception.
In actuality, the mental function that causes dyslexia is a gift in the truest sense of the word: a natural ability, a talent. For example, dyslexics often have the gift of thinking in pictures, the gift of curiosity about how things work, and the gift of vivid imagination.
How Can I Learn More?
Be sure to read The Gift of Dyslexia by Ronald D. Davis, a dyslexic who discovered in 1980 that he could use his perceptual abilities to read without difficulty. In 1982, he established the Reading Research Council where he surrounded himself with doctors, psychologists, and educators to develop his program for correcting dyslexia. Two years later, the Council opened its doors to clients and now claims a success rate of 97% in helping clients to overcome their reading problems. In 1995, Davis Dyslexia Association International (DDAI) began a worldwide training program.
Another practical resource, Your Child: Dyslexia, by Robin Temple, gives easy-to-follow advice for parents and others who are confused about the array of information about how to get help for dyslexics. He describes briefly the various approaches and theories and provides a framework by which to evaluate them.
